Messenger RNA (mRNA) is generated to be translated into proteins, many kinds of "noncoding" RNA also exist and these complex molecules share the property of being nontranslatable. The traditional categories of non-coding RNA is ribosomal RNA and transfer RNA, which are involved in the translation process.

uring the past decade, RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a natural mechanism for silencing gene expression. This ancient cellular antiviral response can be exploited to allow specific inhibition of gene function chosen destination. RNAi is proving to be a valuable research tool, allowing much faster characterization of the function of known genes. More importantly, RNAi technology considerably strengthens functional genomics to help in identifying new genes involved in disease processes. This review describes the basic principles of molecular biology of RNAi phenomenon and examines the main technical issues regarding optimization of RNAi experimental design.

RNAi is a mechanism in molecular biology where the presence of certain fragments of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) interferes with the expression of a particular gene that share a similar sequence with the dsRNA.
